Review of African Drum Circle

Location:  Markham Virginia - usually once a week, there are other locations as well, check with instructor

May 19, 2013

Teacher's web site:  mawuyadrummers.com
He also has a CD of his music "Deep Roots Zimbabwean Drums" that's very good.

Price: $15 for a 1/2 hour lesson

How we got there: we drove

Best For: 8 and up, kids that like music.

Rating: 4 stars - I'd go more often if it weren't so far away.

Most Interesting Thing I learned:  If you hands feel itchy you are doing it right, but you have to drum more to get used to the feeling.

African Drum Circle

Learn how to play the drums a bunch of different ways. The teacher, Jona Masiya, studied drums in Africa, got music degrees in collage, and is really amazing at drumming. In the class, you get to play games with rhythm in a group. Check the website above to find out when and where the next lesson is and make reservations. The teacher was really good with kids (like me) who had never done this before. Also, the he lets you put your own style into the music when the group is playing. The instructor has drums for the class, but some people bring their own.
